WEDDINGS: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you shoot on film or digital? I like digital cameras, but I prefer traditional large and medium format cameras, which is why I still shoot exclusively on film. Although I regularly work in colour, I prefer to work in black and white. I’m passionate about traditional photography - if you share this passion, I’d love to hear from you.

How many weddings do you photograph each year? I accept a limited number of wedding commissions each year, which is important, because it allows me to give each client my complete and undivided attention. I can be also be commissioned to photograph small weekday weddings and civil ceremonies.

How many photographs should I expect to receive? It is important to work with a photographer whose work you admire. If you are looking for a photographer who will provide you with hundreds of digital images on a disk, I’m not the right person for you. I’m sure you will agree that it is much better to have a smaller number of beautifully presented photographs than a disk containing hundreds of mediocre digital images. An album will normally contain between 40 and 80 photographs.

Can my photographs be copied onto CD or DVD? Although I shoot on film, I often combine photographic and digital technologies in my post-production process. My specialist film scanner allows me to create digital images from each shoot, which can be professionally edited and copied onto CD or DVD.

What type of albums do you use? Your wedding album will become a family heirloom, and one of the most valuable objects in your home, which is why presentation of your photographs is as important as the photographs themselves. My wedding albums are beautiful handmade objects created by master craftsperson in East Sussex.

Do you offer pre-wedding and post-wedding photo-shoots? I offer both pre-wedding and post-wedding photo-shoots, which are the perfect accompaniment to your wedding album. I also offer engagement shoots. I typically meet with my clients a few months before the wedding to discuss their requirements. Clients are encouraged to bring any relevant research to this meeting (i.e. magazine clippings, drawings, etc); I’ll then conduct my own research and begin planning the shooting schedule.

How much do you charge and when can I pay? Prices will vary depending on your brief, but I offer a flexible pricing structure. I require a deposit of fifty percent to confirm a booking. The remaining fifty percent is due when you collect your photographs – normally between eight to twelve weeks after the wedding.

Where are you based / How far are you prepared to travel? I’m based in Oxford, but I am happy to photograph a wedding anywhere in the UK (or overseas).

How are the photographs printed? The most time-consuming part of my job begins the day after your wedding when I start developing your negatives and printing your photographs. I’m passionate about printing traditional black and white photographs, so I enjoy this part of the job immensely; however, this is a lengthy process requiring skill and patience, and should not be rushed. If treated properly, your photographs will never fade or discolour because they will be printed by hand onto beautiful archival quality photographic paper in my traditional black and white darkroom. As a traditional black and white printing specialist, I’m able to create genuine sepia toned photographic prints (as opposed to imitation digital sepia prints, which pale in comparison to the real thing). I’m also able to print enlargements up to 24x24 inches in size. If you opt for colour photographs, they will be developed and printed by one of the most highly respected professional photo-labs in the UK. For more information, please contact me.
